Directly south of Charleston is the City of James Island. Surrounded by the Charleston Harbor, the Stono River, Wappoo Creek, and Clarks Point, it is a rare occurrence to drive over a James Island bridge without seeing recreational activity in the water below. Boating, waterskiing, and fishing are among the favorite pastimes of James Island residents. Folly Beach, the rustic, laid-back beach town across from Clarks Sound, has a boardwalk, a few small hotels, a lively surfing culture, frequent fishing tournaments, and a variety of summertime events. The city is also home to the Country Club of Charleston, the Municipal Golf Course, and the James Island Yacht Club. Each December, people from all over the tri-county area head to James Island County Park to view the exquisite Festival of Lights.
Marsh front neighborhoods with water views are plentiful in James Island, including Stiles Point Plantation, White Point Estates, Seaside Plantation, Bayview Farms, Parrot Creek, Lighthouse Point, Clearview, Clarks Point, and Country Club, and many have private docks, neighborhood docks, or other amenities. James Island also has several classic, brick home neighborhoods such as Riverland Terrace, Harbor Woods, and Lawton Bluff. Across Clarks Sound in Folly Beach, a wide variety of single family homes and condos are available.
