West Ashley is known as the birthplace of Charleston. In 1670, English colonists established the first permanent Carolina settlement along the Ashley River, where the historic Charles Towne Landing and Animal Forest now reside. Today, West Ashley’s population is approximately 50,000, resting between the Ashley River and Stono River just outside of downtown Charleston. Shopping, dining, nightlife, and medical facilities are abundant, and the Ashley River and Stono River borders provide plenty of water-related recreational activities. West Ashley residents also enjoy convenient access to Summerville, James Island, John’s Island, North Charleston, and Mount Pleasant.
Real estate in West Ashley ranges from the classic, brick home subdivisions of Avondale, Byrnes Downs, Windermere, Moreland, and Northbridge Terrace – to the stately, “old south” neighborhoods of Wappoo Heights and The Crescent – to the sprawling new home developments of Grand Oaks Plantation and Carolina Bay. Whether you’re interested in a marsh front single family home, a riverfront estate, a classy condo, or a modest townhome, West Ashley can accommodate any budget or style.
